Do I need my own WhatsApp Business number?
Not for verification codes: they come from a verified business number through Tawked. Sending WhatsApp messages under your own name from your own number (order updates and the like) is the WhatsApp Messages API: connect your WhatsApp Business Account from the dashboard and send approved templates from your code.
What if the user does not have WhatsApp?
Send the code by SMS from the same API. The channel is a field in the request, so you choose per user.
